The Motability Scheme was set up to help disabled drivers and their families become more mobile and independent by allowing them to exchange their mobility allowance for a new car of their choice.

If you receive either of the following, you are eligible for the Motability Scheme:
• Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance
• War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
Under the scheme, you may exchange part or all of your allowance for a Motability car. If you are unable to drive, you can nominate up to two people to drive for you and parents or carers of children with a disability may also apply on behalf of the child.
Leasing Options
There are two leasing options available on the Motability Scheme – Contract Hire and Hire Purchase.
Contract Hire is the most popular option and is an agreement of three years under which your tax, insurance, breakdown cover and aftersales care is provided. Hire Purchase is an agreement of between two and five years and allows you to buy your own car. Breakdown cover, insurance, tax and aftersales services are not included in the Hire Purchase leasing agreement.
If you choose Hire Purchase, you will need to be receiving the allowance for the full length of the agreement. Contract Hire customers will need to have 12 months’ award length remaining on their allowance to be eligible for the scheme.
